How do you expect us to register in two weeks if we don’t even know what books are being assigned for the knowledge tests?

  7. 7 On January 29th, 2007, Sami Ahmed said:

true that…no way you can put any 500 page book 2 weeks before because we just can’t do it since we’ll be doing all our other MIST preparations…we don’t read that quickly for school and even though we love MIST more than school, I just don’t see that as organized…I’m guessing that Ahmed isn’t behind the book selection because he is clutch on timing non-desi style…please fix this Houston

    Assalamu Alaikum,

I’m going to respond to all your comments inshallah. Each response corresponds to the number of the post:

Post 1: Knowledge Books have been updated and are online.

Post 3: We added the new Juz as a consensus from all the competition chairs from the different regions. Some regions have an equal amount of girls in both Quran competitions and some do not. If it doesn’t work out this year, we will look into lessening the requirements for that competition next year inshallah.

Post 4: I’m really sorry that it’s not cool but inshallah I still hope that you have a good time at MIST and can find other competitions that fit your talents. We do take your comments seriously and will consider them next year when working on the competitions inshallah.

Post 5: There has to be at least 5 boys and 5 girls in the memorization and tajweed competitions. If after registration, we notice that there is an insufficient number of registrants for the competition, we do combine them. In this case, of course, the judges are all female. Boys do not get to hear the girl’s recitation since the judges would call each competitor in the room one at a time. If you have any more questions, please email us.

Post 6: Each year, it takes us a long time to finalize the books. This is a really crucial step since we do need to read the books before we choose them. We do appreciate your patience. We are all volunteers and we try our best to do things in a timely fashion. Alhamdulilah, the knowledge books have been posted on the website today.

Post 7: We wouldn’t expect you to read a 500 page book 2 weeks before the tournament. You have 2 months and a half. We do try our best to be as organized as possible. Please keep in mind that we are all volunteers with families and our own schooling, so inshallah your patience and forgiveness for our shortcomings is definitely appreciated. I would also like to add that it’s not one region’s fault for the delay since all regions work together to come up with the competition materials and topics.

I hope I have answered all your questions. If you have any further questions, please don’t hesitate to email us.

For the tafseer test, do you need to know each ayat’s meaning of every surah?

  11. 11 On February 19th, 2007, Rasha El-haggan said:

You do not need to memorize the ayaat. However, you will be expected to answer questions related to the ayaat. That is why you can bring with you a Quran with Arabic/English translation but no tafseer.

    Assalamu Alaikum

    ASA,
Alhamdulilah today I had some time to read the comments. I think all the volunteers are doing a wonderful job, but at the same time you need to get some adults involve who can give ther time and work with you gyus to get this well organized. Just a suggestion.
One more thing when you are going to post material for MIST bowl.
    JazakAllah Khair.

    Salaam,
I would like to know how long each knowledge test will be. (number of pages…)

  14. 14 On February 28th, 2007, Shama said:

Another knowledge test question: Are we allowed to bring notes (that we wrote) on the material to help us on the test?

  15. 15 On February 28th, 2007, Rasha El-haggan said:

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Jazakumu Allahu Khayran for your comments. As far as the adults being involved, I’m not sure what constitutes “adult.” I mean, I am married and have 3 children and I’m 30. Does that mean I’m an adult? I’d like to think I’m still a child at heart :)

Now let’s get serious. Narmi’s question about how long the test is: Don’t know yet. We are still in the process of writing the tests.

Shama’s question: No notes are allowed for any test.

Let us know if you have any more questions inshallah.

    saalam
this may sound really ignorant but I’ve never done tafseer test so what exactly is
the difference between tafseer and translation like is tafseer the topics of discussion/
objective and purpose of the surah like it’s on the website provided on the rules sheet for it
also, like do we just have to study dat website for each surah or like memorize the
translation for every verse in the surah but den that would be to much because each surah
has like over a 100 verses.. it’s kind of confusion.. could you help

  17. 17 On March 13th, 2007, Ahmed Salim said:

Tafseer, or Qur’anic exegis, is a body of literature that adds information from Hadith and other sources to help contextualize the words of the Qur’an. Therefore, tafseer is simply an explanation of the translation. You need to be familiar with both in order to compete in the Tafseer Test competition, but you do not need to memorize all of it.

  18. 18 On March 18th, 2007, Rasha El-haggan said:

You especially do not need to memorize all the translation because this test is an open Quran test. You can have an English/Arabic Quran. It just can’t have a lot of tafseer in it.

  19. 19 On March 20th, 2007, ADNAN said:

AA….i wuz wondering y did u only have first place for tajweed because i think it would be harder…because you may lose by a minor mistake………just wodering because i think it should at least be a 1st 2nd and 3rd……….plz explain

  20. 20 On March 21st, 2007, Tatheer said:

    Salaam,
I was wondering that if it’s an open book test, we’re allowed to bring our own copies of the Quran so then can we bring a quran with english translation?

  21. 21 On March 23rd, 2007, Rasha El-haggan said:

Please see answers above in previous posts regarding the open book test policy. Regarding the 1st place tajweed, I’ll get back to you on this inshallah. But initially, the idea was that students should be encouraged to participate inthe Memorization competition instead of just tajweed. Again, as I said I’ll get back to you about the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for tajweed and if it will be still held this year.

I want to become a hafiza when i grow up but, their is something that always stops me from memorising ever since i left mosque. Its proberbly temptation and all the other worldly affairs going around the world. I also wanted to I also wanted to ask how many years it takes to be a hafiza. Please giveme advice.

    Jazakallah khair

    Walaikumusalaam,
My bros are actually doing hifz..so it usually takes around 3 years depending on
how fast you can memorize. Younger students around the age of 6-7 can memorize even
faster because of their ability to grasp and remember such concepts.dont delay bcoming a hafiza because the
    older you become, the HARDER.

    Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullah
This will be my first year at MIST as i am a freshman, and I have a question about the Tafseer test. Will the judge call each person in at a time and tell them to recite a passage without looking over it? Or will the person have some time to look over the passage and then recite it with tajweed to the judge? I just needed some clarification at that part.
    Jazakallah for your help!

  27. 27 On April 1st, 2007, Ahmed Salim said:

I am assuming you mean Tajweed test. You will be asked to recite on the spot.

For the Tajweed test, you may have a mushaf (written copy of Qur’an) with you.

For the Memorization test, you must recite from memory, without the help of a mushaf.

    Assalamu Alaikum,

Maa’riful Qur’an is a much more comprehensive and easy to understand tafseer. It is usually found in book form, but this website has the entire collection of 8 volumes in pdf format. Use your knowledge of the order of surahs to determine which volume the surah you are looking for can be found in. For example, Volume 8 contains Surah Muhammad through to Surah An Nas. Play with the links until you find where your surah is located.

Helpful Hint: Print out the pages your are attempting to read. It’s much easier to highlight and study that way.
