Director of Finance
The Director of Finance is responsible for the financial integrity, transparency, and compliance across all of MIST. This role oversees national and regional financial operations, budgeting, training, and sponsorship coordination, while helping maintain MIST’s fiscal health and adherence to regulatory standards. The Director of Finance also leads the National Finance committee. The Director of Finance will build and scale the finance function from the ground up, establish institutional-grade financial infrastructure, and ultimately help position the organization for long-term sustainability.
The organization is operating with roughly $600,000 in annual cashflow. The organization is growing rapidly and requires an annual external audit based on State of Michigan requirements. There is tremendous growth at MIST and the next leader has the opportunity to further progress the organization as a valued, and key, stakeholder.
Official Start Date: September 1st, 2026
(A 4-month transition period with the outgoing Director will precede the starting date)
Key Responsibilities
Financial Oversight
Oversee the National Finance committee and manage bank accounts for all regions
Ensure timely submission of the annual Form 990 and other required regulatory documents
Propose, manage, and adjust the annual Shared Revenues budget, including calculating and collecting dues
Oversee the review and approval process for all regional budgets
Operations
Serve as a strategic partner to the Executive Director and Board of Trustees, contributing to enterprise strategy, capital allocation, and long-term value creation
Design and scale all core finance functions, including accounting, FP&A, tax, and internal controls
Implement scalable systems and processes (ERP, reporting tools, dashboards, etc.)
Lead cash flow management, liquidity planning, and debt covenant compliance
Partner with operations to improve unit economics, pricing, and cost structure
Financial Training & Compliance:
Maintain, update, and enforce MIST’s Financial Guidelines
Coordinate training for regional teams, including bookkeeping and budget creation
Sponsorships & Fund Management:
Oversee the coordination of multi‑region or national sponsorships with external organizations
Oversee national funds, including budgeting for national events and communicating fund disbursements to stakeholders
Legal Compliance:
Collaborate with the and Executive Director and Board of Trustees to support legal compliance efforts and ensure financial activities meet regulatory standard in both the US & Canada
Ensure GAAP compliance, audit readiness, and sponsor/donor reporting standards
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field required
MBA and/or CPA strongly preferred
Candidates must hold a passport and be available to travel between the US and Canada
Cannot hold a concurrent MIST organizing role (must step down if selected)
Prior MIST experience is preferred
Prior experience with Quickbooks, ERP platforms, and creating and maintaining budgets
Strong attention to detail and ability to work under tight deadlines with high accuracy
Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across teams
Commitment to organizational stewardship, including supporting ELT peers and participating in broader strategic discussions beyond assigned responsibilities
Ability to dedicate 12 - 16 hours/week
